Do You Need to Complete Indonesia’s Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD)?

The Indonesia Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD) is mandatory for all travelers entering Indonesia by air, sea, or land. Whether you're visiting Bali, Jakarta, or any other destination, completing the ECD is essential—even for short stays or returning Indonesian citizens.

The system was first introduced for international airports and has since expanded nationwide. You must fill out the ECD within 2 days prior to arrival. It covers customs information such as items brought, currency, and restricted goods.

As of June 2024, all international passengers, including those from ASEAN countries, must submit the ECD online to avoid delays during customs clearance on arrival in Indonesia.

Who Doesn’t Need to Submit Indonesia’s Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD)?

Not all travelers entering Indonesia are required to submit the Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD). Depending on your travel circumstances, you may be exempt. Here’s a quick overview:

Crew Members on Duty

Airline or ship crew who are entering Indonesia as part of their official duties are typically exempt from filling out the ECD.

Transit Passengers (No Customs Clearance)

If you are transiting through an Indonesian airport and do not go through immigration or customs (remaining in the transit area), you do not need to submit the ECD.

Travelers entering Indonesia on official diplomatic assignments may be exempt from the ECD requirement, depending on bilateral agreements or international conventions.

Indonesia ECD Perks:
What’s Included

Got your Indonesia Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD)? That means you’re set for arrival in Indonesia — but what exactly does it cover? Whether you’re visiting for a tropical escape, a short business trip, or returning home, here’s what your ECD does: it ensures smooth customs clearance and helps you comply with Indonesia’s entry and declaration requirements.

Tourism & Sightseeing – Discover Indonesia’s highlights like Bali’s beaches, Jakarta’s city life, Yogyakarta’s temples, Komodo Island, and scenic volcanoes.

1

Family & Friends Visits – Reconnect with loved ones and spend quality time with family or relatives in Indonesia.

2

Business Trips – Join meetings, seminars, or conferences in Indonesia (for short-term business purposes only).

3

Short Courses & Workshops – Take part in training sessions, workshops, or short courses in Indonesia (must be completed within 3 months).

4

Just remember – While the ECD helps with customs clearance for tourism, business, and personal trips, it is not a visa and does not grant permission for work, long-term stays, or residence. Follow the rules, and you’re good to go!

5

While the ECD allows for various types of short-term visits, for other purposes not mentioned here — including long-term stays or employment — a different type of visa (such as KITAS, Second Home, Retirement, or Work Visa) may be required in Indonesia.
